HACKKRK #5 - NIGHT OF OPEN SOURCE

Recent HackKRKs all centered around knowledge sharing and competition. It’s time we put these newly acquired tricks and energy into giving back to the community. On Thursday May 17th we’re coming back with the night of Open Source hacking.
Let’s get together to build, fix and test software we all use everyday. Everyone of us uses a lot of Free Software after all.

Some of the already suggested projects include:

There will be more and everyone is more than welcome to work on anything they like. It’s free - register for the event here and help us spread the word about the best hacker event in Krakow!

See you May 17th at Future Simple Lab - Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie 5/4. We will provide great food, beer and Red-Bulls!

Make sure to visit us at http://www.hackkrk.com, on Facebook and follow us on Twitter at @hackkrk.

HACKKRK #4 - SUPER SOCIAL NIGHT

And so the 4th installation of HackKRK is now behind us. We’ve had loads of fun and the whole place was buzzing with ideas and knowledge being exchanged freely.

At 6pm @kiszal introduced everybody to the 2 activity tracks people could choose from: Speed Dating and Code Retreat - it all went off from there.

HackKRK #4 Second track - mini Code Retreat

They say that ‘less is more’ but in case of HackKRK it’s not that simple. As you know main topic is Speed Dating but we wanted to give our hackers more freedom to choose and added a second track. HackKRK #4 will feature a mini CodeRetreat session! CodeRetreat is a programming exercise in TDD and Pair Programming. It was started by Corey Haines and here’s how it works:

You pair with another dev (we’ll help you find one) and for 45 minutes you code a simple but not trivial problem, Game of Life. We will start with 2-3 sessions and see what happens. Then we evaluate what was good, what could be better and put some constraints to have more fun. Have you tried writing code without an ‘if’ statements? Or never write a method longer than 1 line? How about not speaking to person you’re Pair Programming with? Certainly you can switch tracks back and forth! This and more waits for you at HackKRK #4. You can read more about how it works at http://coderetreat.com/

PS. If you want to take part in CodeRetreat, make sure you have your development environment with test framework ready to rock!

The first Mobile Kombat

Mobile developers of all kinds gathered at the Future Simple office to participate in Mobile Kombat — a unique event that would unveil the top platform to code in.

The rules were pretty simple. We set up 5 coding challenges for the attendees to solve. Each one consisted of a few subtasks and required the use of different APIs and mobile coding skills. Each subtask was worth one point. You can take a look at the puzzles here:

http://mobile-kombat.herokuapp.com/puzzles

We had three platforms taking part in the contest:

  • Windows Phone
  • Android
  • iOS
The contest started at 6pm when @kiszal introduced everyone to the idea of the event and described the puzzles. Everyone started coding immediately and soon enough @mryapee and Artur( https://github.com/vizZ ) scored the first point for the Android team for solving the first part of the Moving shapes puzzle.  It didn’t take long for @nerusek and @tigiscus to score points for the Windows Phone team. Most of the time there was a tie between the Windows Phone and Android teams. It wasn’t till the last hour when the iPhone team started to finish off their apps and score tons of points. At midnight, both Android and iPhone teams had 15 points. A few minutes later, the iPhone team led by @_bejo provided the solution to Screen Saver challenge and put the iPhone team in the first place.

A few moments later we all met to congratulate the winners, both the whole iPhone team as well as @bartekfi and @mherych for winning the individual team competition.

All in all it was an amazing event and we are extremely glad you guys joined us. Especially the guys who don’t live here in Krakow and came from Radom and Gliwice — we are super hyped you decided to attend! Big thanks to all the participants and congratulations to the winners. Hope you had fun and, as always, if you have any suggestions, please let us know!

HackKRK #4 Speed Dating

dating

Last two HackKRKs were all about competition. Let’s chill out a bit and focus on
learning new stuff this time. We all have our favourite tools, languages, tricks and
good practices. Idea is to meet and share those hidden gems of knowledge. Think
of the most awesome thing you know. We’ll randomly assign a hacker to you and
give you both 30 minutes. In 15 minutes you will share your stuff and in the next
quarter of an hour you’re gonna get a chunk of knowledge back. Topics may vary! Just be sure
to be ready to explain your stuff to a fellow hacker coding in a different technology. Sample topics might include CSRF protection, vim plugins or intro to Haskell!

Sign up here and join us Thursday (12th of April)!

  • Each technology will be represented by 8 developers, split into teams of 2
  • Teams will be awarded points for each completed task
  • After 6 hours of hardcore coding we will choose the best team and the best technology
